Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi has basically completed the groundwork for the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam, slated for February 27-28, and the official friendship visit by Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un.
Within only two weeks, more than 4,000 flower pots were put up and 500,000 plants were planted, from Vo Nguyen Giap road, stretching 12km from Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai International Airport, to inner city streets.
Nearly 4,000 lamp posts on Hanoi’s tree-lined streets are decked with the flags of Vietnam, the US and the DPRK, fluttering above a handshake design.
The city has also asked environmental companies to clean up major streets, especially those surrounding the planned venues of meetings during the summit.
Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said it is Hanoi’s honour and pride to be selected as the location for the second summit between the US and the DPRK.
This is also a chance for Vietnam and Hanoi to promote the Vietnamese land and people, as well as the image of a city for peace, the official said, stressing that the summit takes place along with the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO’s recognition of Hanoi as the “City for Peace.”
Chung called for the contributions of not only ministries, centrally-run agencies and Hanoi authorities but also all people to the event.
Apart from communication work, Hanoi has urged departments and agencies to focus on traffic safety, firefighting and rescue operations, particularly logistics at the International Media Centre to serve the summit.
Regarding the city’s tourism development plans after the event, Chung said tourism is expected to become an economic spearhead sector.
To that end, the city has stepped up environmental work and organised cultural events, while implementing codes of conduct in tourism to lure both domestic and international tourists.-VNA
