HCM City hosts banquet to mark 73rd National Day

HCM City (VNA) – Authorities of HoChi Minh City hosted a banquet on September 1 in celebration of the 73rdNational Day of Vietnam (September 2, 1945).

The event was attended by Politburo member andSecretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan, Chairman of themunicipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong, and Chairwoman of themunicipal People’s Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam. 

It also saw the presence of foreign consulsgeneral and their spouses, along with representatives of foreign consulates,economic-trade-cultural agencies, foreign business associations, andinternational and non-governmental organisations in HCM City.

In his speech, Phong said 73 years ago, underthe leadership of then President Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party ofVietnam, the Vietnamese people launched the great August Revolution to regainnational independence and establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now theSocialist Republic of Vietnam, opening an era of independence, self-reliance,freedom and social progress for the country.

The spirit and the will of the August Revolutionhelped the Vietnamese people weather all difficulties and challenges to win thestruggle for national liberation and reunification three decades later andsucceeded in national reforms and development over the last 32 years, he noted.

Phong added that joining in the country’sdynamic development, HCM City has continually made efforts to deserve the statusof being the economic locomotive of Vietnam and the centre of the southern keyeconomic region.

To achieve development targets, aside frompotential and internal strength, the city also needs the close cooperation andwholehearted support from the international community, he said, noting that itwill exert every effort to improve the investment climate and create the bestpossible conditions for businesses.

The official also thanked foreign friends forpractically contributing to local development, expressing his hope that foreignconsulates, organisations and enterprises will continue assisting HCM City in becominga wealthy and beautiful locality.

On behalf of foreign consuls in the city, ConsulGeneral of Russia Aleksey V. Popov offered congratulations on Vietnam’sNational Day, describing the September 2, 1945 as a great historical eventmarking the foundation of the first State of workers and farmers in SoutheastAsia and also heralding the major achievements in the fight for nationalliberation and development efforts later.

He also congratulated HCM City on itsattainments, noting that it has continually taken the lead in socio-economicreforms and clearly shown its role as an important gateway for trade, economic,investment, technological and cultural exchanges in Asia-Pacific.

The diplomat thanked local authorities forcreating favourable conditions for foreign consulates to fulfill their duties.He pledged more efforts to consolidate the friendship and all-round cooperationbetween foreign countries and Vietnam, including HCM City.-VNA

NA deputies continue to discuss amendments to Constitution on May 14

The draft resolution to amend and supplement certain articles of the 2013 Constitution comprises two main articles. Article 1 outlines eight proposed amendments and additions to existing constitutional provisions, focusing on the role of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) and other socio-political organisations, administrative units, and the organisation of local government. Article 2 contains three clauses dealing with enforcement and transitional provisions of the amendments.
