Ho Chi Minh City has plans to establish a centre for paediatric organ transplants, to be based in Nhi Dong 2 Hospital, the hospital’s director Dr. Ha Manh Tuan said on September 5.
At the 10-year anniversary of the hospital’s organ transplant programme, Dr. Ha Manh Tuan said the hospital has carried out 12 kidney and eight liver transplant surgeries on children.
The first kidney transplant was conducted in June 2004 with the assistance of experts from Belgium, and the first liver transplant came in December 2005.
Most recently, the hospital’s doctors successfully performed a liver transplant for a child patient on September 4 this year.
In the northern region, the Central Paediatric Hospital has so far conducted 20 kidney and eight liver transplants.
Associate Professor, Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue – Director of Department of Health Care Management (Ministry of Health) spoke highly of the achievements and efforts of doctors and experts in the field in spite of limited medical facilities.
In Vietnam, the first organ transplant was carried out in 1992 at the Military Hospital 103 in Hanoi. The National Centre for Co-ordinating Human Organ Transplants, the first of its kind in the country, was founded at the Vietnam-Germany Hospital in June 2013.-VNA
