Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating their strategic economic partnership and enhancing the stability of regional supply chains through the second Indonesia–Japan Cooperation Dialogue (IJCD), held in Jakarta on February 28.

The meeting was co-chaired by Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha C. Nasir and Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Akahori Takeshi.

At the dialogue, both sides agreed to step up cooperation to ensure that regional supply chains remain stable, flexible and better able to adapt to global geo-economic fluctuations.

Within the IJCD framework, Indonesia and Japan also agreed to expand collaboration in future-oriented sectors such as clean energy, the digital economy and strategic infrastructure development. The move is seen as crucial to ensuring sustainable economic growth and strengthening resilience amid mounting global uncertainties.

The two countries reiterated their commitment to enhancing coordination in key areas, including trade, investment, energy transition, the maritime economy and strategic industrial development. Japan was described as an important partner supporting Indonesia’s economic transformation programme, particularly through high-quality investment, industrial downstreaming and sustainable development cooperation.

In addition, both sides underscored the importance of cooperation in emerging technologies to bolster competitiveness, foster innovation and improve economic resilience in the face of increasing global disruptions.

The second IJCD followed the “2+2” meeting between the two countries’ foreign and defence ministers in November 2025, as well as the first IJCD held in Tokyo in 2021. Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the dialogue as an important opportunity to shape bilateral cooperation amid increasingly complex global geo-economic dynamics.

Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan were established in 1958 and have steadily expanded, evolving from a Strategic Partnership for a Peaceful and Prosperous Future in 2006 to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.

Japan remains one of Indonesia’s leading economic partners, with bilateral trade reaching 32.07 billion USD in 2025 and realised investment amounting to approximately 3.1 billion USD./.
