Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia Airports’ local network recorded 9.4 million passenger movements in January, the first month of Visit Malaysia year 2026 (VM2026), reflecting the country’s growing global appeal, according to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
Notably, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport (PEN) recorded the highest year-on-year growth within the network. KLIA led with 5.9 million passenger movements, an 8.2% increase, followed by PEN with 741,183 passengers, a 3.8% rise.
MAHB Managing Director Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani said the growth reflects strong travel demand and Malaysia’s expanding connectivity across the region.
The group remains focused on upgrading infrastructure, strengthening network connectivity, and delivering consistent service standards across all airports.
Visa exemptions for citizens of China and India - two of Asia’s largest outbound travel markets - along with enhanced air connectivity have supported the surge in arrivals. Political and social stability, strong security assurances and increased investment in tourism products have further reinforced Malaysia’s appeal.
In 2025, the nation welcomed 42.2 million foreign visitors. To sustain this momentum, Malaysia is intensifying its focus on distinctive tourism offerings designed to attract international travellers. The country has set a target of receiving 47 million international arrivals this year./.
