Thailand strengthens border security

Foreign nationals linked to cross-border cyber fraud networks have increasingly attempted to enter Thailand illegally as authorities step up raids and prosecutions, Pol Maj Gen Jaturapat Piromkaew, commander of the Foreign Affairs Division and deputy spokesman for the RTP, said on February 25.

Bangkok (VNA) – The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has ordered heightened border security after detecting attempts by transnational scam syndicates to slip into Thailand to evade intensified crackdowns in neighbouring countries.

He added that in recent weeks, police have coordinated with immigration officials, the military, and local administrative agencies to tighten border controls and intercept illegal entrants.

According to Jaturapat, all transnational criminals attempting to establish fraudulent operations in Thailand or use the country as a transit point for illicit activities will be swiftly and relentlessly pursued by law enforcement without exception.

National police chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch has ordered maximum border security measures, including the establishment of joint task forces to seal off natural crossings and the installation of stringent checkpoints on major and secondary routes nationwide, aiming to ensure that any syndicate members attempting to enter are intercepted and prosecuted under Thai law. The RTP is also working closely with international partners to exchange intelligence on the movements of scam networks.

According to a United Nations report, scam centres in Southeast Asia have caused billions of US dollars in losses, partly driven by human trafficking, with thousands of workers forced to engage in online fraud./.
