Representatives of the Indonesian National Police and the Royal Malaysian Police take a group photo on the sidelines of the bilateral meeting (Source: VNA)Jakarta (VNA) – Police officers from Indonesia and Malaysia have gathered at a meeting in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara from November 7-9 to discuss cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
The meeting, the 11th of its kind, was held by the Indonesia National Police's Criminal Investigation Department and the Royal Malaysian Police (CID).
The two sides agreed to improve cooperation in exchange of information and data, including on new types of drugs that have not yet entered Indonesia, said Police Crime Department Chief General Inspector Ari Dono Sukmanto.
He underlined the significance of the cooperation for the Indonesian government, especially in efforts to fight drugs, which are viewed as a transnational threat.
The two sides also discussed the impact of the Philippine Government’s war on drugs, affirming that with extreme pressure in the Philippines, there is a high likelihood of drug dealing syndicates entering Malaysia and Indonesia.
CID called on authorities of the two nations to work more closely with each other, with a focus on small-scale cooperation and drug fighting at local levels.
The department also underlined the need for regional cooperation in addressing drug trafficking.-VNA
