Indonesia plans ASEAN disaster response simulation exercise

Jakarta (VNA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) of Indonesia is planning to hold the ASEAN Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (ARDEX) in Bantul, Yogyakarta province this year.

The 2023 ARDEX is scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 3 outside the Sultan Agung Stadium in Bantul, BNPB Chief Secretary Lilik Kurniawan said on March 8.

The exercise will form part of the ASEAN 2023 agenda of Chair Indonesia.

Indonesia expects the participation of all ASEAN countries, with at least each country sending five to 10 people, he said, adding that the BNPB will also invite countries that are Indonesia's partners in disaster mitigation such as Australia, the US, Japan, and Switzerland, as well as others as observers.

This year's ARDEX will also be part of the commemoration of the 17th anniversary of the 2006 earthquake in Bantul that killed over 5,700 people and injured tens of thousands of others./.
