Indonesia, US discuss ways to boost trade ties

Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesian Coordinating Minister for EconomicAffairs Airlangga Hartarto and US Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Kim onJuly 8 discussed ways to intensify bilateral trade between the two nations.

Trade between Indonesia and the US was valued at 30 billionUSD, lower than the US's bilateral trade with other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

With Indonesia's position as the largest economy in ASEAN, there is plenty of room for increasing the bilateral trade by two orthree folds, Hartarto noted in a statement.

The minister also lauded the US's support to Indonesia’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

For his part, Kim was optimistic that the economic ties,covering trade and investment, would continue to develop.

Highlighting the US’s concern over a spike in COVID-19 casesin Indonesia, the diplomat said the US has decided to donate 4 million doses of Moderna vaccine as well as technical and other medical aid, includingoxygen, to Indonesia.

The two officials also deliberated the prospect of cooperationin renewable energy./.
