Information cards distributed for Cambodian voters

The National Election Committee (NEC) of Cambodia on April 17 started to deliver information cards for voters who registered to vote in the communal election in coming June.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The NationalElection Committee (NEC) of Cambodia on April 17 started to deliver informationcards for voters who registered to vote in the communal election in comingJune.

At a press conference on April 18, the NECsaid that voters will receive the information cards until May 16, creatingfavourable conditions for them to check personal information on the cards aswell as know where they are to vote.

However, the information cards could notreplace identity cards or family records, said Hong Puthea, spokesman of theNEC, adding that more than 7 percent of voters received their cards as of April17.

The information card delivery is part of the NEC’s activities to ensure safetyfor the official voter list as hackers recently tried to change the data whichwas posted on the committee’s public website.

The commune/ward election of Cambodiais held every five years. The fourth election is scheduled to take place on June4, with 12 political parties running for posts at 1,646 communal/ward councilsacross the nation and over 7.8 million voters.

Results of the election will have greatinfluence on the election of the 6th National Assembly, which isexpected to be held in mid-2018.

In the 5th NA election on July 28, 2013, the ruling CambodiaPeople’s Party (CPP) won 68 seats out of 123 seats in the legislature, while theopposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) secured 55 seats.-VNA
