Hanoi (VNA) – An official of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said she is impressed with Vietnam’s efforts in migration governance, and that the country’s dynamic approach, which balances economic growth, international cooperation, and people-centred development, has provided valuable lessons for others globally.
Kendra Rinas, IOM Chief of Mission in Vietnam, made the remarks while addressing a conference held in Hanoi on December 18 to review the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
She highly valued Vietnam’s efforts in the GCM implementation, notably the release of the Vietnam Migration Profile 2023 in October 2024.
In her speech, Phan Thi Minh Giang, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)’s Consular Department, pointed out that opportunities for regular migration are being narrowed considerably while migration challenges emerging amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence and requirements for green transition and a digital economy.
Given this, she noted, it is necessary to further enhance cooperation to minimise informal migration channels, combat the crime of irregular migration facilitation and human trafficking, and promote regular migration channels, helping reduce global inequality and accelerate the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The conference consisted three main sessions, focusing on the IOM implementation in Vietnam this year, challenges to international migration management, and measures for improving the implementation effectiveness.
The event, organised by the MoFA and the IOM, drew some 70 participants, including representatives of Vietnamese ministries and localities, and the International Labour Organisation (ILO)./.
