Jakarta (VNA) – Jakarta has decided to increase taxes for several sectors thisyear in a bid to boost revenue and reduce pollution.
The city will revise the building and land acquisition tax, street lighttax and parking fee tax.
The three new policies will be subject to amendments, such as the off-streetparking fee tariff based on time and place, billboard rental tariffs and theuse of LED billboards in tightly-controlled zones, and the taxable value of property for land andbuildings.
Secretary ofthe city’s revenue agency Pilar Hendrani said the regulations needed updating since they were first introduced tenyears ago and were not suitable anymore.
Jakarta has sufferedfrom severe air pollution andtraffic congestion for years so the revised regulations are expected to tacklethese issues, he said.
Hendrani addedthat the tariff on groundwater would also be tapped as a progressive tax in a bid to control theconsumption of groundwater and halt saline intrusion in thecapital.
Meanwhile, thetax adjustment on parking fees is aimed at reducing traffic congestion andencouraging Jakartans to use public transport as the government tries to curb air pollution and build an eco-friendly city./.
