Jakarta (VNA) – Jakarta has decided to increase taxes for several sectors this year in a bid to boost revenue and reduce pollution.
The city will revise the building and land acquisition tax, street light tax and parking fee tax.
The three new policies will be subject to amendments, such as the off-street parking fee tariff based on time and place, billboard rental tariffs and the use of LED billboards in tightly-controlled zones, and the taxable value of property for land and buildings.
Secretary of the city’s revenue agency Pilar Hendrani said the regulations needed updating since they were first introduced ten years ago and were not suitable anymore.
Jakarta has suffered from severe air pollution and traffic congestion for years so the revised regulations are expected to tackle these issues, he said.
Hendrani added that the tariff on groundwater would also be tapped as a progressive tax in a bid to control the consumption of groundwater and halt saline intrusion in the capital.
Meanwhile, the tax adjustment on parking fees is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and encouraging Jakartans to use public transport as the government tries to curb air pollution and build an eco-friendly city./.
