Japan will provide Laos with 5.21 billion JPY (nearly 70 million USD) in aid to help upgrade an international airport in the capital city of Vientiane and an expressway.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith exchanged a diplomatic note on the assistance package in Tokyo on August 2.

The Japanese authorities said that the airport would be expanded to timely serve the Asia – Europe Meeting hosted by Laos by 2012.

Meanwhile, the 1,500 km expressway will link Laos with three countries of the Great Mekong Sub-region including Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, as part of the East - West Economic Corridor Development project.

Earlier, Sisoulith visited Notori city in Miyagi prefecture, one of localities that were seriously devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and donated 320,000 USD collected by Lao citizens to victims of the disasters./.
