Khmer people set to be switched on

The Southern Power Cooperation (SPC) will hasten works to complete a project to supply power for more than 10,000 mostly Khmer households in the two southern provinces of Soc Trang and Tra Vinh in mid-April, SPC Vice Director Pham Ngoc Le has said.

Theaverage annual power consumption rate of Khmer society is about 65-75KWh per person, equivalent to 10-11 percent of the nationwide average.Once completed, the project is expected to provide power to 90 percentof households in Soc Trang and 92 percent in Tra Vinh.

Currently, SPC and electricity companies in the two provinces haveclosely coordinated with local governments, contractors and constructionagencies to tackle all difficulties during implementation, ensuringprogress of the project.

Starting from July 2011with a total investment of 533.4 billion VND, with 85 percentcontributed by the Government, the project is expected to be finishedbefore April 13, just prior to the traditional Tet holiday of the Khmerpeople, the Chol Chnam Thmay.
