The National Week for Labour Safety and Explosion Prevention was launched in Dong Nai province on March 18.

Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Pham Thi Hai Chuyen said it is part of her ministry's effort to reduce the incidence of workplace accidents, which has been increasing at an alarming rate in recent years.

The number of people killed and injured in such accidents increased by more than 15 percent last year. In almost 6,000 accidents, 574 people were killed and more than 1,310 were seriously injured.

They caused losses worth more than 304 billion VND (14.5 million USD).


Another 84 died in almost 2,000 fires and explosions last year, not to mention property losses amounting to 934 billion VND and destruction of 2,000 ha of forest. On the occasion, the Danish Ambassador to Vietnam , John Nielsen said Denmark will provide 10 million USD to help Vietnam reduce workplace acidents.
