The Russian visitor in Lam Dong province who was suspected of contracting the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome – Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) tested negative for the deadly virus, affirmed the Central Highlands province’s Department of Health Director Pham Thi Bach Yen on June 24.

The 24-year-old female patient came to Da Lat several days ago. She passed in transit through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Thailand – two MERS-CoV-affected countries – before arriving in Vietnam.

On June 22, she had a high fever and sore throat and came to a local hospital the day after for a medical check.

The patient and the man who accompanied her during the visit were then transferred to a separate section at Lam Dong General Hospital.

Since the beginning of this month, the provincial health sector has actively carried out preventive measures at Lien Khuong International Airport to ensure effective control of the disease with passengers, especially those arriving from Middle Eastern countries.

MERS-CoV, first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, belongs to a family of corona viruses including SARS, which haunted Asia in 2003.

According to the Preventive Health Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, as of June 23, the Republic of Korea had reported 175 cases and 27 fatalities.-VNA
