At least eight people are reported to have been killed on the night ofJuly 29 after torrential rain caused flooding and landslides in Ambon,the capital of Indonesia’s eastern province of Maluku.
The disaster also left five others missing and 10 people injured.
A search and rescue operation is under way, with police and militarypersonnel scouring the rubble for those still unaccounted for, saidNational Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
The floods submerged houses on river banks and landslides in severalareas among Ambon's hills snapped out about 30 houses and damaged 50others, pushing over 4,000 people fleeing from homes.
Earlier,a dam in the province burst, destroying 470 houses, leaving threepeople missing and forcing 5,000 people to evacuate.
Meanwhile,in the Philippines, heavy rains and floods in Mindanao province forcedmore than 45,000 people to evacuate the area, announced the spokespersonfor Filipino Vice President Abigail Valte on July 30.
The country is going to distribute 36,000 food and aid packages worth 293,000 USD in the region.
Earlier, 30,000 aid packages were sent to people in distress inMaguindanao and Sarangani provinces who were affected by the floods.-VNA
