Vientiane (VNA) – Authorities in the Lao capital city of Vientiane have removed checkpoints established during the lockdown period to maintain a balance between COVID-19 prevention measures and economic recovery, despite rising cases.
Previously, Vientiane had imposed multiple measures to restrict people’s outings and mass gatherings, such as establishing checkpoints in many roads and shutdown of supermarkets and stores. However, the city admitted that such rigorous measures have hindered people and businesses’ efforts to revive the economy hit hard by the pandemic.
Checkpoints have been removed from major roads, allowing people to freely travel while some remain in place in red zones.
Laos reported 309 new COVID-19 cases in October 11, raising the national count to 28,850. The country also recorded four more deaths over the last 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities to 30.
Vientiane remained one of the country’s COVID-19 hotspots with 119 community infections documented in just a day./.
