Hanoi (VNA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on July 16 met with visiting Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

At the meeting, the two leaders deliberated measures to further promote the bilateral relationship which was described as "at its best level".

The meeting served as an avenue for both leaders to discuss a wide range of bilateral cooperation particularly on defense and security, regional and global issues of common interest, according to a statement issued by the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office.

Both leaders were pleased with the commitment shown by both countries to curb the spread of extremism and terrorism in the region, the statement said.

Malaysia has also expressed support towards peace and development in Mindanao, Southern Philippines, it added.

A day earlier, Mahathir and Duterte watched a boxing match in which Philippine boxing legend Manny Pacquiao won a world welterweight champion title.-VNA
