Hanoi (VNA) – Memorial services were held overseas to remember former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Do Muoi over the last few days.
In Egypt, the Embassy of Vietnam paid respects to Muoi, who also served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers (now Prime Minister), in a ceremony in Cairo on October 8. Ambassador Do Hoang Long and the embassy’s staff honoured the late leader with a moment of silence and incense offering.
Writing in the book of condolences, Long recalled Muoi’s great contributions to Vietnam’s “doi moi” (reform) period and international integration and his personal memories when he was working for the late Party chief.
Representatives from local governments and diplomats in Egypt from China, Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Thailand, Georgia and more also visited the Vietnamese Embassy to pay homage to Muoi.
A similar event was held to pay tribute to the former leader in Dhaka, Bangladesh on October 6 – 7.
In his remarks, Ambassador Tran Van Khoa expressed deep sadness over the passing of Do Muoi, saying his death is a great loss to the Party, State and people of Vietnam.
Under his leadership, Vietnam had seen remarkable milestones and achieved unprecedented breakthroughs that lifted the country out of economic crisis, soaring inflation and embargos and successfully implemented “doi moi,” he said.
Several senior governmental officials of Bangladesh, foreign diplomats from Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Butan, Singapore, the UEA and Iraq alongside Vietnamese expats came to pay tribute to Do Muoi.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former CPV General Secretary Do Muoi on October 1, 2018,” Bangladeshi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam wrote in the funeral book. The next generations will remember him as a great leader with respect and gratitude towards his dedication to Vietnam’s “doi moi” and development, he added.
President of the Bangladeshi Communist Party Mujahidul Islam Selim wrote the Communist Party of Bangladesh was deeply saddened by the death of former Vietnamese Communist Party leader Do Muoi.
State officials, diplomats and foreign friends also came to the Embassy of Vietnam in Buenos Aires, Argentina to bid farewell to Muoi in a memorial service on October 5 – 6.
Following a moment of silence for the late leader, Ambassador to Argentina Dang Xuan Dung recalled his career as a young revolutionary and his great contributions to the country’s reunification and “doi moi” as well as his role in promoting friendship and cooperation with other countries.
Former CPV General Secretary Do Muoi passed away at 23:12 on October 1 at the Military Central Hospital 108 due to serious illness, aged 101.–VNA
