Mobile phone subscribers will be able to retain their numbers when switching to other mobile service providers since 2017, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

According to the Authority of Telecommunications under the MIC, the pilot connection between three major network operators Viettel, Mobifone and VNPT will begin in December.

The same month, the Authority of Telecommunications will complete the construction of the concentrated database for trial run and the facility is capable of allowing four million subscribers to switch networks without limiting the number of network switches for a period of three years.

The MIC said the connection of the three major network can meet the needs of over 90 percent of all mobile subscribers.

The policy was mentioned for the first time in 2006 but was only approved by the MIC for implementation in 2013.

Around 70 countries in the world are applying this policy and most of them are developed nations such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia.-VNA
