– President Vo Van Thuong on August 30 decidedto reduce death penalties to life sentences for 11 prisoners.
The commutation is within the jurisdiction ofthe State President as stipulated in the Constitution and law, and at theproposals the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court, Prosecutor General ofthe Supreme People's Procuracy and Chairman of the Presidential Office. - A seminar took place in the southern provinceof Dong Nai on August 30 to assess the local pilot wild elephant conservationprogramme towards harmonious coexistence.
The project is part of a joint effort between theVietnamese Government and Humane Society International (HSI). By using cameratraps to create individual photo IDs and profiles for each animal, whilemonitoring human-elephant conflict incidents and conducting elephantdistribution surveys, it aims to better understand elephants, their movementsand behaviour to help humanely mitigate human-elephant conflict, whichthreatens this endangered sub-population of Asia’s elephants.
