Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam obtained numerous important and comprehensive outcomes in socio-economic development in the first half of this year, with many targets fulfilled and exceeded expectations, heard a conference held in Hanoi on July 15 by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

However, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung assessed tasks in the upcoming period will still be very difficult for the entire planning, investment, and statistics sector.

Challenges remain

At the conference reviewing the ministry’s management in H1 and implementing tasks in the remaining six months of this year, Minister Dung hailed outstanding efforts in the planning, investment, and statistics sector in implementing solutions.

"These results create confidence and new motivation to strive to reach higher targets, especially economic growth, for 2024 set by the National Assembly,” the minister said.

Amidst the unpredictable developments in the global and domestic situation, the minister opined that opportunities and challenges intertwine. Domestically, some industries face obstacles, typically retail and services. Demand and purchasing power in the market have yet to recover completely. Input costs are still high, and "bottlenecks" in the housing and real estate sector have yet to be resolved.

Therefore, he emphasised that the next six months are a particularly important time with tasks set for the planning, investment, and statistics industries.

Unleashing internal strength

Recently, a Government Resolution outlined a growth scenario for 2024 at 6.5% - 7%, higher than the target of 6% - 6.5% in the National Assembly's Resolution. This goal is also higher than the forecasts of international organisations, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasting Vietnam's growth in 2024 at 5.8%, the World Bank (WB) at 5.5%, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at 6%.

Minister Dung said this is also a requirement for making a plan for 2025, by the guiding spirit of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong that "Next year must achieve better results, higher than the previous year."

On this basis, the minister pointed out ten key tasks for the entire industry.

He pointed out that apart from removing obstacles to unleash resources for development, the MPI needs to concentrate its efforts on building mechanisms in support of domestic enterprises and large-scale industries that are capable of taking the lead in important sectors.

This is one of the 10 important tasks to be implemented by the ministry in the second half of this year, the minister added.

He stressed the need to effectively put in place newly-issued policies and regulations, and roll out breakthrough solutions to spur growth, asking agencies to join hands in building socio-economic plans and solutions for 2025.

According to a report at the conference, the ministry has also given consultancy to competent agencies to perfect relevant policies to facilitate investment, while enhancing international cooperation in the semiconductor industry.

The ministry has also coordinated with other ministries and agencies in drafting a project on human resources development in service of the semiconductor industry to 2050. This was submitted to the Prime Minister for approval, and proposed the establishment of a national steering committee for the development of the sector./.
