Myanmar: Government, KIO resume peace talks

The Myanmar Government and the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) on May 28 resumed peace talks in Myitkyina, the capital of Myanmar 's northernmost state of Kachin.

According to newsreports, the Government side was headed by U Aung Min, Vice Chairman ofthe Central Peace Making Work Committee, and Lieutenant General MyimtSoe from the Defence Ministry, while the KIO side was led by U Sun LutKan and Deputy Commander General Khun Maw.

Thethree-day talks were also attended by special envoy of the UN SecretaryGeneral Vijay Nambiar, as well as representatives from Kachin stateparliament, ethnic minority groups and China .

The round of talks beginning May 28 is the first to be held in theKachin state capital of Myitkyina. Previous rounds took place inThailand on February 20 and in China on February 4 and March 12.
