Hanoi (VNA) – Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong lauded the World Health Organisation (WHO) for partnering with Vietnam to improve public health care quality during a reception in Hanoi on April 26 for WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Takeshi Kasai.

Phong thanked the director for his contributions in his capacity as WHO chief representative in Vietnam during 2012-2014.

She informed her guest that Vietnam is devising social policies towards progress, fairness and effectiveness.

The Vietnamese Party and State consider policies and laws on health care and population a focus to achieve the people-centred goal for comprehensive development, she said, adding that the Vietnamese legislature will give opinions on the draft law on the prevention and control of harmful consequences of alcoholic drinks and beer, and amendments to the Law on Health Check-Up and Treatment and the Law on Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS.

The host asked the WHO to continue assisting Vietnam in public health care, with a focus on updating health situation in Vietnam, the region and the world, sharing its experience in devising and carrying out policies on prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and working closely with Vietnam in disease control, particularly newly-emerging epidemics.

She suggested that the WHO continue helping carry out public health care projects, especially in remote, mountainous and ethnic minority areas, to narrow the gap of accessing public health care services in regions.

Kasai, for his part, expressed interest in further supporting Vietnam in public health care, providing the country with world health information and solutions to public health care issues.

He wished that Vietnam would share its achievements and difficulties in the process so that the WHO and other international health care organisations could support Vietnam in the near future.-VNA
