General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage left Hanoi on June 25, starting his three-day official visit to Thailand at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Head of the CPV Central Committee’s Commission for External Affairs Hoang Binh Quan, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Pham Thi Hai Chuyen, among others.
According to Hoang Binh Quan, Party leader Trong is scheduled to hold talks with Yingluck and meet with the Thai King, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate of Thailand.
He will also host receptions for leaders of Thai political parties and visit Nakhon Phanom province, a memorial area dedicated to late President Ho Chi Minh, the Thailand-Vietnam friendship village and several economic and cultural facilities in the country.
The two sides are expected to issue a joint statement on the official establishment of the strategic partnership, ushering in a new chapter in their bilateral ties.
Vietnam and Thailand established their diplomatic ties in August 1976.
Economic and trade ties between the two countries have been expanded, particularly in rice production and export, finance, transport and oil and gas.
Last year, two-way trade hit 8.62 billion USD. Thailand now ranks tenth out of Vietnam’s 96 investors with 300 projects worth a total of 6.11 billion USD. Vietnam has invested in seven projects in Thailand with a total capital of 11.35 million USD.-VNA
