Hanoi, (VNA) – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said on June 25 that the visit by President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Heng Samrin was a significant event in a series of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties. The Party leader made the statement while receiving Heng Samrin and his delegation in Hanoi.
General Secretary Trong congratulated Cambodia on it successes in the local elections this month, and praised achievements the country attained under the rein of King Norodom Sihamoni and the Royal Government.
He said the Party, State and people of Vietnam always attach special importance to the relationship with Cambodia, and thanked the latter for its assistance for Vietnam’s cause of national liberation in the past and national construction and defence at present.
For his part, NA President Samrin affirmed that Cambodia always cherishes the enormous role of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in saving the Cambodian people from the genocidal Pol Pot regime.
He also emphasised that the Government, National Assembly and people of Cambodia view Vietnam as “a good brother, good friend, good neighbour” and will continue to support Vietnam on regional and international issues.
Praising Vietnam’s socio-economic development and improved living standard, Heng Samrin said he is convinced Vietnam will continue its achievements in industrialisation and modernisation.
Both Party leader Trong and NA President Heng Samrin said they want to further develop the friendship and cooperation between their two countries.
During his visit, the Cambodian NA leader, who is also Chairman of the National Council of the Solidarity Front for Development of the Cambodian Motherland, attended a ceremony held in Hanoi on June 24 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations. He also took part in the third conference of the Presidents of the front organisations of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam on June 25.-VNA
