The Philippines’ largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), has declared a truce, opening possibility of peace talk resumption.

“We are reciprocating the government’s suspension of military operations against the MILF. With these declarations of ceasefire, we can now move on and talk about peace in Mindanao,” chief MILF peace negotiator Mohagher Iqbal told The Manila Times.

The MILF’s decision was made two days after Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered a halt on all military offensives against the MILF in an effort to revive the stalled peace talks, which collapsed in August, last year.

The armed conflicts between the government’s armed forces and the MILF caused the death of hundreds of people in Mindanao. The MILF took armed actions against the government to establish an independent Islamic state./.
