Hanoi (VNA) – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on December 2 chaired a Politburo meeting on a project to review the 10-year implementation of a resolution on the orientations and tasks for the development of Ho Chi Minh City until 2020 and 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Members hailed the efforts by the Party Committee and administration of the country's biggest metropolis in overcoming difficulties and challenges to record many achievements in socio-economic development as well as defence and security safeguarding.
The city’s economic scale rose 2.7 times in the 2010-2020 period, while the per capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) doubled. Its economic structure has been transformed with higher contributions from the industrial and service sectors and high-tech agriculture, they noted, adding that progress has been seen in all areas, and social welfare ensured.
However, they pointed out that HCM City has faced a number of shortcomings, including slow improvement of its investment environment, low international competitiveness, and per capita income below the set target.
The Politburo said that Resolution No. 16-NQ/TW was issued with an aim to turn the city into a modern service-industrial city, a driving force for the country’s digital economy and digital society as well as an economic, financial, trade, science, technology and cultural centre of southeast Asia with deep and extensive international integration by 2030.
By 2045, the city is expected to have become an Asia's economic, financial and service centre, an attractive global destination, with distinctive economic and cultural development, a high quality of life, and a developed city on par with major cities in the world.
The Politburo asked the Party Committee, administration and citizens of HCM City to continue to promote their revolutionary tradition and solidarity and work closely with relevant agencies and localities to continue effectively implement the resolution.
It is necessary to change the mindset on the construction and development of the city in the new period, while boosting economic development, improving its international competitiveness, strengthening regional connectivity, speeding up infrastructure construction, and showing better performance in planning.
Members of the Politburo also stressed the need for HCM City to strengthen sustainable urban development with better adaption to climate change, while mobilising all resources and optimising advantages and potential for fast and sustainable development, promoting growth in all areas and improving people’s living conditions.
They also underlined the necessity for the city to focus more on Party building, dcentralisation and delegation of power, and continue to implement pilot special policies for its development./.
