Hanoi (VNA) - The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee hosted a meeting in Hanoi on January 16 for former NA leaders, former members of NA Standing Committee, and retired full-time deputies and staff of the NA Office in the North on the occasion of the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival.

The event saw the attendance of NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man, former NA Chairmen Nguyen Van An and Nguyen Sinh Hung, former NA Permanent Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, NA Vice Chairpersons Nguyen Khac Dinh, Nguyen Duc Hai, Tran Quang Phuong, and Nguyen Thi Thanh.

Addressing the meeting, NA Chairman Man highlighted the nation’s strong performance in 2024 despite global and domestic challenges.

Last year, the country's GDP grew by 7.09%, and foreign trade reached a record high of 786 billion USD, while over 2 quadrillion VND (85 billion USD) of budget revenue was collected, exceeding the set targets. At the same time, inflation was controlled, social welfare expanded, and national security strengthened, he noted.

Efforts to streamline the political system's organisational apparatus are underway, he stated, adding that the NA will convene an extraordinary session in late February to make adjustments and supplements to a number of laws to enable the smooth operations of the political system from the central to local levels from March.

Also in 2024, the NA approved 31 laws and 42 resolutions, tackling institutional bottlenecks and supporting critical reforms, said the top legislator who acknowledged that the helpful experiences and lessons left from the past tenures have greatly contributed to the performance of the 15th NA tenure.

He said that 2025 is positioned as a pivotal year, with significant milestones and preparations for the 14th National Party Congress and the 16th NA elections. This year, the NA has outlined key objectives, including approving 34 new laws and revising multiple legal frameworks to align with national development, streamlining governance structures to improve efficiency and effectiveness from the central to local levels, and strengthening oversight mechanisms to ensure policies are implemented effectively, said NA Chairman Man.

He expressed his hope that the former NA leaders, retired deputies and staff will continue to contribute their ideas to the NA, helping the legislature to further renovate itself, and improve its law-building capacity, supreme supervision and decisions on important issues of the country./.
