Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese State will create all possible conditions for the system of intellectual property to grow and make maximal contributions to socio-economic development, affirmed President Tran Dai Quang.

He made the remark while receiving Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in Hanoi on March 21.

He thanked WIPO for its support for Vietnam in the past time and spoke highly of the organisation’s role as a global forum on intellectual property services, policies, information and cooperation.

Vietnam has defined protecting industrial patents, ensuring fair competition, and encouraging creativity via the Civil Code’s regulations on industrial patents protection, Quang said.

Intellectual property plays an important role in helping Vietnam realise its growth target of between 6.5 and 7 percent by 2020, he added.

The President stated that Vietnam wants favourable conditions to participate further in WIPO institutions and increased technical cooperation with the organisation, particularly in devising a national master plan on intellectual property.

For his part, Francis Gurry congratulated Vietnam on recent socio-economic attainments based on clear economic and technological development strategies.

He noted that Vietnam has contributed to WIPO’s general success and that WIPO hopes for strengthened cooperation with the country in the future.
