Hanoi (VNA) – Total fatalities in earthquakes in the Philippines since October 16 have reached 20, with at least five deaths reported in the magnitude 6.5 quake that shook Cotabato province in Mindanao, southern Philippines, on October 31 morning.

The tremor struck 33 kilometers northeast of Tulunan town, which was also the epicenter of the magnitude 6.6 quake on October 29 and a magnitude 6.3 temblor last Oct. 16.

President Rodrigo Duterte was in his hometown Davao City when the quake struck but he is safe.

Many houses and structures in Mindanao were destroyed in the series of earth quakes.

The office of President Duterte has instructed related agencies to provide the maximum possible support to areas hit by the disasters.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) advised locals to stay outside of houses and buildings for fear of strong aftershocks./.
