Quang Tri: 119kg wartime bomb successfully handled

The PeaceTrees Vietnam (PTVN), the first US NGO licensed to operate in the search and clearance of unexploded ordnances (UXOs) in Vietnam, said it has successfully handled a 119kg MK81 bomb left from the war discovered in the central province of Quang Tri.

Quang Tri (VNA) – The PeaceTrees Vietnam (PTVN),the first US NGO licensed to operate in the search and clearance of unexploded ordnances (UXOs) in Vietnam, saidit has successfully handled a 119kg MK81 bomb left from the war discovered inthe central province of Quang Tri.  

The high-explosive, aircraft bomb was detected by Ho VanThanh, a resident in Huong Hoa district, when doing farm works.

Informed of the explosive found at a depth of 15cm, a PTVN mobile mine clearance teamquickly arrived at the scene. They then moved the bomb, with adiameter of 230mm and a length of 1.88m, to a place for detonation.

The PTVN operates in the central region to supportcommunities and people severely affected by the consequences of war viahumanitarian actions and development assistance. Between 1995 and now, theorganisation has handled over 140,000 explosives, cleared over 2,200 hectaresof land, educated over 180,000 people on mine accident prevention, built kindergartens,and aided victims and their families.

Quang Tri is the most polluted locality in Vietnam in terms of UXOs. Landmines andbombs have killed over 3,430 people and injured 5,100 others since the warended in 1975.

So far, 34 non-governmental and 23 internationalorganisations have joined bomb and mine clearance efforts in the province, whichtargets becoming the first locality nationwide to be free from wartime bombs,mines and other UXOs by 2025./.

Tien Giang steps up efforts to eliminate substandard houses

According to the Tien Giang People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed.

Bac Giang to eliminate substandard houses by November

Local authorities have identified 795 homes of poor and near-poor households and individuals with recognised service to the nation that qualify for support. Of these, 475 require complete reconstruction and 320 need significant repairs, with estimated costs totaling 39 billion VND (1.53 million USD).

They also consented to promote the development of a cross-border economic cooperation zone through sectoral cooperation at Hai Yen industrial park, Van Ninh international port in Mong Cai; a cross-border e-commerce industrial park; and transport connectivity projects between the two cities including the international railway line from Mong Cai to Dongxing, Bac Luan III bridge, and an auxiliary rough steel bridge.
