Gia Lai (VNA)Torrential rains and a whirlwind have caused heavy losses, including one death, in Gia Lai and Quang Binh provinces over the last few days.

Downpours from June 9 to 11 caused one death and damaged bridges and crops in Chu Prong, Ia Grai and Duc Co districts of the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, according to the preliminary report of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

About 70 houses were flooded in Chu Prong district while many ponds broke, some infrastructure facilities like bridges were damaged, and vast areas of crops like cassava, maize, rice and coffee were deep under water.

Meanwhile, rivers and streams in Duc Co district have been in full spate, washing away a resident in Ia Dom commune.

In the central province of Quang Binh, a strong whirlwind and rainstorm occurred in mountainous Trong Hoa commune of Minh Hoa district on June 12, damaging about 10 houses and devastating more than five hectares of perennial trees and nearly two hectares of crops. 

Local authorities are giving support to people in the affected areas and surveying the damage.-VNA
