Ratification of EU-Vietnam deals, ILO convention makes NA’s highlight

The ninth working day of the 14th National Assembly (NA)’s ninth session on June 8 was marked with the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), along with the country’s membership of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Convention 105.

Hanoi (VNA) – The ninthworking day of the 14th National Assembly (NA)’s ninth session on June 8 was marked with the ratificationof the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Investment ProtectionAgreement (EVIPA), along with the country’s membership of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Convention105.

This was also the first dayof the ninth session lawmakers met in person at the NA’s building in Hanoi.

The sitting in the morningwas also attended by the EU Ambassador to Vietnam and representatives of 18 EUcountries’ embassies in Hanoi, namely France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, theNetherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Austria,Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

After NA Chairwoman NguyenThi Kim Ngan reported on the outcomes of the ninth session’s online discussionfrom May 20 to 28, legislators voted on the resolutions ratifying the EVFTA,the EVIPA and the ILO’s Convention 105 (Abolition of Forced Labour Convention),which won the majority of support.

These activities werebroadcast live by Radio The Voice of Vietnam, the Vietnam Television and the NA’sTV channel.

Besides, parliamentariansalso agreed to supplement the ninth session’s agenda with the consideration ofa draft resolution on the reduction of the corporate income tax thatbusinesses, cooperatives, public service agencies and other organisations haveto pay in 2020.

On behalf of the PrimeMinister, Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Le Minh Hung proposed the NAraise the charter capital at the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and RuralDevelopment. Chairman of the NA’s Committee for Economic Affairs Vu Hong Thanhdelivered a verification report on this issue.

Minister of Planning andInvestment Nguyen Chi Dung, on behalf of the PM, submitted a draft resolutionon recognising and allowing the enforcement of rulings issued by disputesettlement agencies under the EVIPA. A verification report on this draft waslater presented by Chairwoman of the NA’s Committee for Judicial Affairs Le Thi Nga.

NA’s 9th extraordinary session wraps up

Speaking at the closing ceremony, NA Chairman Man stated that the session, which lasted six and a half days, adopted multiple laws and resolutions aimed at reorganising the state apparatus and accelerating socio-economic development.

Resolution adjusting 2025 socio-economic development plan adopted

Under the resolution, the legislative body decided to adjust some key targets. Accordingly, the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate is set to reach 8% or higher, with the GDP scale this year expected to exceed 500 billion USD. The GDP per capita is projected to surpass 5,000 USD, and the average consumer price index (CPI) growth rate is targeted to be around 4.5 - 5%.

National Assembly adopts two revised laws

On February 19, the 15th National Assembly adopted the Law on Organisation of Local Governments (revised) and the Law on Promulgation of Legal Documents (revised).

NA greenlights investment policy of Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong rail project

According to the resolution, the construction of a modern and harmonious railway aims to meet the transport demand between Vietnam and China. The initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for rapid and sustainable economic development along the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong economic corridor while strengthening national defence and security and promoting the industrialisation and modernisation, contributing to delivering on the targets and missions set at the documents of the 13th National Party Congress and the Party’s resolutions.

NA deputies to approve several resolutions, laws on February 19

The deputies will pass a resolution addressing issues related to the streamlining of the political system’s organisational apparatus, a resolution on supplementation to the 2025 socio-economic development plan with a growth target of at least 8%, and another on pilot policies to remove barriers in science-technology research and innovation activities.
