Repairs near completion on marine cables

Repairs of the high-bandwidth fibre optic submarine cable system known as Asia-American Gateway are currently underway and expected to be completed later this month, according to representatives of FPT Telecom, Viettel and Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

Arepresentative of FPT Telecom said the company had restored two-thirdsof the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) capacity which was severed on March 8in Vung Tau area of Vietnam.

International internet access hadbeen improved with the repairs which would be finished around March 22and 25, said Hoang Minh Cuong, deputy director of Vietnam DataCommunication (VDC).

He said the International TelecommunicationCompany (VTI) was working with authorities to coordinate ships to theAAG cable to facilitate the repairs.

This month VDC and VNPT willopen new optical cables to connect with other countries so as toenhance service quality and meet customer needs.

Le Huu Hien,deputy director of Viettel Telecom, said that after the urgentsupplement of additional capacity to its international connections,Viettel network subscribers would have stable internet access.

The560 million USD AAG is a 20,000- kilometre-long submarinecommunications cable system, connecting Southeast Asia with the USmainland, across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii./.
