The Republic of Korea (RoK) on March 31 approved the resumption of aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) after the Yeonpyeong island shelling occurred in November last year.
The RoK Ministry of Unification agreed to the request of the RoK-based US Eugene Bell Foundation to send tuberculosis medicine valued at 336 million won (305,000 USD) to the DPRK.
The DPRK is in need of food assistance to tackle a critical food shortage affecting a quarter of its population, the United Nations announced on March 24. Other UN agencies, including the World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture organisation and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), also urged the international community to immediately supply 475,000 tonnes of food to Pyongyang .
DPRK suffered from the coldest ever winter for decades, resulting in reduction by half of the country’s food output, which is expected to run out by mid-June./.
