The Republic of Korea (RoK) on December 18 transferred 500,000 doses of Tamiflu and Relenza worth 15 million USD to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in order to help stem the spread of A/H1N1 influenza there.

According to the RoK Unification Ministry, this is the RoK’s first humanitarian aid to the country since DPRK President Lee Myung-bak took office in February 2008.

The RoK plans to provide hand washing liquid worth 1 billion won (846,740 USD) to the DPRK next month.

Last week, the DPRK confirmed its first A/H1N1-infected cases and announced to accept the RoK’s medical assistance.

The Yonhap news agency said on December 18 that the RoK Government is speeding up the amendment of plans on improving the inter-Korea relationship drafted in November 2007 under the Roh Moo-hyun administration./.
