Russia’s “Immortal Regiment” commemorated in Hanoi

The Russian Embassy and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Hanoi jointly held a ceremony to commemorate the “Immortal Regiment” of Russia at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long on May 8 on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War in Russia (May 9).

Hanoi (VNA) – The Russian Embassy andthe Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Hanoi jointly held a ceremony tocommemorate the “Immortal Regiment”of Russia at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long on May 8 on the occasion of the74th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War in Russia (May9).

Theevent was attended by Russian Ambassador to Vietnam K.V. Vnukov, Russiandiplomats and citizens who are residing and working and in Vietnam, andrepresentatives of the Vietnam VeteransAssociation (VVA).

In his opening speech, Vnukovsaid this is the third time an event of this kind has been held in Vietnam,adding that it affirmed that generations today still remember and are grateful forthe glorious feat by heroes of the former Soviet Union (now Russian Federation) andVietnam.

Talking about the close relations betweenthe two nations during the wartime, Colonel Nguyen Khanh Duy from the VVA sharedthat the success of the October Revolution in 1917 opened up “the revolutionarypath” of Vietnam.

The victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War in 1945 createdan objective premise for the success of Vietnam’s August Revolution in the sameyear, he added.

The Vietnamese people appreciated the Soviet Union’s support for Vietnam in thewar for national independence, and during the country’s national reconstructionfollowing the war, Duy said.–VNA

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said the two sides should strengthen the teaching and learning of Vietnamese and Lao in both countries, including introducing Vietnamese as an optional foreign language in Lao schools, while continuing academic exchanges and programmes on tradition education to nurture the special bilateral relationship, he said.
