Senior UK defence official visits Vietnam

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff of the UK is paying a working visit to Vietnam from November 3-5 to boost defence cooperation between the two countries.

At a meeting with General Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Minister of National Defence, in Hanoi on November 4, the guest was informed of the outcomes of the cooperation between the two nations’ armies and defence ministries.

The host proposed Vietnam and the UK continue to effectively implement the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence cooperation signed in November 2011.

The two sides should work towards the signing of cooperation agreements in training, defence industry and peace keeping, in accordance with the two countries’ strategic partnership framework, he added.

General Ty urged the two sides to enhance affiliations in the fields of marine and cyber security, training, information-technology and the UN peace-keeping activities in addition to collaboration in search and rescue, medical military, humanitarian support, disaster relief, and settlement of post-war bombs and mines in Vietnam.

During the visit, Stuart paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and held talks with the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence on measures to foster defence and military cooperation between the two countries.-VNA
