Strong earthquake shakes northern Thailand

There is no report so far about casualties or damages caused by thequake, but TV footages showed broken windows at shops and cracked wallsin many buildings. Passengers at Chiang Rai airport also had toevacuate.

Tremor was felt in Chiang Mai city, 60kmfrom Chiangrai, and people in Bangkok 800km away as well as in Yangon ofMyanmar also noticed the vibration.

BurinWechbunthung from the Thai Meteorological Department said this was thestrongest quake in Thailand for a while. Experts have recorded fiveaftershocks so far.

Strong earthquake is rare in Thailand but its northern region see moderate quakes happen from time to time.-VNA
