A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the northern region of Thailand late May 5.

There is no report so far about casualties or damages caused by the quake, but TV footages showed broken windows at shops and cracked walls in many buildings. Passengers at Chiang Rai airport also had to evacuate.

Tremor was felt in Chiang Mai city, 60km from Chiangrai, and people in Bangkok 800km away as well as in Yangon of Myanmar also noticed the vibration.

Burin Wechbunthung from the Thai Meteorological Department said this was the strongest quake in Thailand for a while. Experts have recorded five aftershocks so far.

Strong earthquake is rare in Thailand but its northern region see moderate quakes happen from time to time.-VNA
