Hanoi (VNA) – The strongest cold spell of this winter is likely to occur in January 2023, said Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecast division under the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Huong said the cold temperature in the 2022-2023 winter is equivalent to the average level in years.

It’s possible to see severe cold spells come in the northern and north-central regions in the second half of December and severely cold days mostly are in January and the first half of February.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the average temperature in December 2022 is about 0.5 degree Celsius lower than the average of the previous years.

The average temperature of January 2023 is approximately the same as the average of the previous years.

According to Huong, 2022 is the third year in a row that Vietnam is affected by La Nina that is a rare  phenomenon and usually appears every two years. So, the number of storms is forecast to be higher than the average for many years and the total rainfall is also higher than the average for years./.
