BinhDinh (VNA) – A total of 671 fishing vessels were built under Decree No.67/2014/ND-CP on policies for fisheries development as of May 31, this year.

Thefigure was reported at a symposium on the building and upgrade of fishing boatsin the central province of Binh Dinh on June 9.

Accordingto localities, all the 771 newly-built and upgraded boats have began operationwith many of them earning up to 1 billion VND (44,000 USD) each year.

TheMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said since theimplementation of the decree two years ago, localities nationwide have receivedthe green light to build 2,284 boats.

Nearly1,950 ships are eligible to access bank credits and contracts worth nearly 9.3trillion VND (409 million USD) were signed between 945 ship owners andcommercial banks, the symposium heard.

However, the problem lies with the low quality of steel-coated boats due to the limitedcapacity of shipyards, loose supervision of ship owners over the building,  and fishermen’s weaknesses in masteringadvanced operation technologies.

Giventhis, MARD Deputy Minister Vo Van Tam urged the Directorate of Fisheries toreview relevant legal documents and seriously inspect the observance of thedocuments.

Localitiesshould intensify their supervision over the operation of shipyards  and continue to train fishermen in usingsteel-coated boats, he said.-VNA
