King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej on May 26 formally approved Army Chief, Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha, as head of the nation's new military government.

According to a royal command, Prayuth will also head the National Council of Peace and Order (NCPO) to run the country.

The commander-in-chief told reporters after receiving the royal endorsement that he will perform his duty with honesty in hope that the right democratic system will return.
He promised to appoint an interim Prime Minister and set up cabinet, but did not give a timeframe.

Prayuth also called for public understanding over the coup, affirming the sincere motives to ease the unrest, adding that the council will do the best to solve the problems.-VNA
