Thai Binh (VNA) – The northern province of Thai Binh is striving to eliminate all temporary and dilapidated houses by June 30, 90 days ahead of its initial schedule.
Local authorities are mobilising resources to accelerate home construction and renovation for poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged families eligible for government support. The province’s "300 days of joint effort to eliminate substandard housing" campaign has driven significant progress.
Among the beneficiaries is 77-year-old Mai Thi Gai from Vu Lac commune, Thai Binh city. With 110 million VND (over 4,000 USD) in aid, she built a new 30sq.m home after years of living alone in a deteriorating house following the passing of her husband and son.
Vu Duc Tien, Chairman of the Vu Lac commune People's Committee, noted that five local families need new or renovated homes. The government has encouraged community members to donate workdays, reducing costs and expediting construction.
Thai Binh has identified 2,106 eligible households—1,164 requiring new homes and 942 needing home repairs. Each new house receives 100 million VND in aid, while 50 million VND is provided for each repaired home. The total budget for the 2024-2025 period is 163.5 billion VND (6.4 million USD).
As of March 13, work had begun on 1,088 houses, with 536 completed and 552 under construction. Around 590 households have opted out of the programme.
The province is also assisting war veterans and families of fallen soldiers, with 866 households identified for new or improved housing. The budget exceeds 65 billion VND (2.5 million USD), and work has started on 419 homes.
Determined to meet its goal ahead of schedule, Thai Binh is mobilising social resources, engaging businesses and philanthropists, and ensuring transparency so aid reaches the right beneficiaries without disputes./.
