Vietnamese students honoured at Asahi scholarship graduation ceremony in Japan

Vietnamese students achieved remarkable successes, excelling in various categories. Seven out of 22 students passed the N1 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test - the highest level - while 16 out of 34 students received the special award. Notably, some Vietnamese students were recognised for outstanding achievements in all three award categories.

Tokyo (VNA) – A total of 159 Vietnamese students, accounting for more than half of the 305 international students, were honoured at the 2025 graduation ceremony for international students studying in Japan under the Asahi Newspaper Scholarship Programme on March 16.

Vietnamese students achieved remarkable successes, excelling in various categories. Seven out of 22 students passed the N1 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test - the highest level - while 16 out of 34 students received the special award. Notably, some Vietnamese students were recognised for outstanding achievements in all three award categories.

Speaking at the ceremony, Katsu Tsunoda, CEO of Asahi Corporation, emphasised the significance of the Asahi full scholarship programme in providing opportunities for underprivileged students to pursue higher education. He highlighted its role in supporting international students in Japan and praised their contributions- particularly those of Vietnamese students - as a valuable asset.

He noted that the involvement of international scholars has played a crucial role in expanding Asahi’s network across Japan. Tsunoda reaffirmed Asahi’s commitment to enhancing the scholarship programme and increasing the number of scholarships available to international students.

Kasahara Yasutaka, Head of Media Development at Asahi, noted that the Asahi full scholarship programme has been implemented in Vietnam for over 30 years, offering financial assistance to economically disadvantaged students and enabling them to pursue their academic dreams.

Under this programme, international students in Japan receive full tuition coverage, accommodation, and a monthly allowance of approximately 150,000 JPY (1,009 USD). In return, they work part-time as newspaper delivery staff.

To date, the programme has awarded over 3,600 scholarships to Vietnamese students, making them the largest group among all international participants. In 2024 alone, nearly 380 scholarships were granted to international students, with 210 of them awarded to Vietnamese scholars./.

Today, the school runs two classes in Hakata district -one for children over five years old and another for younger learners. Despite financial constraints, all teachers continue to work on a volunteer basis, relying on community support to sustain and expand the programme.
