Thai gov’t speeds up to register silk as national heritage

The Biodiversity-Based Economy Development Office (BEDO) and the Department of Sericulture have pushed to register Thai silk on UNESCO's National List of Intangible Culture Heritage.

BEDO Deputy Director Thanit Changthavorn said the organisation has cooperated with the Department of Sericulture to register Thailand's silk products and its technology as a cultural heritage. The agencies hope to complete the process within the year.

BEDO has been in the process of collecting all information pertaining to Thai silk to create a database of its technology and products. The information database will be submitted to the Ministry of Culture for approval.

Once approved, BEDO will submit all information under an application to UNESCO for registration as an intangible cultural heritage. Thanit said the official listing will protect Thailand’s intellectual heritage. He added that the registration will increase the popularity and value recognition of Thai silk in the international market.-VNA
