Thai jasmine rice has taken the mantle of the World’s Best Flavoured Rice for the fifth time and for the second year in a row.
Thai jasmine rice crowned best in world for flavour for fifth time (Source: NNT)Bankok (NNT/VNA) – Thai jasmine rice has taken the mantle of the World’s Best Flavoured Rice for the fifth time and for the second year in a row with Thailand's Ministry of Commerce stating it will leverage the recognition to boost the nation’s rice sales.
Minister of Commerce Aphiradee Tantraporn said that the 9th World's Best Rice 2017 event, organised by rice industry analysts 'The Rice Trader' in Macau, saw Thailand’s jasmine rice being recognised for its superior taste for the second year in a row after reclaiming the honor last year. Jasmine rice was followed by fragrant rice from Cambodia and ST24 rice from Vietnam.
Aphiradee cited the win as an affirmation of Thai rice’s acceptance globally and that efforts to promote it should continue.
The World's Best Rice took place for the first time in 2009 in Cebu of the Philippines and has rotated through countries that grow rice as a central crop. Its panel of judges comprises food experts, culinary consultants from the United States and acclaimed chefs. They use 4 criteria when judging; fragrance, flavor, glutinous texture and appearance. The judges blind taste test the rice and award them points with no prior knowledge of their origin or type.
Altogether, Thai jasmine rice has won the accolade five times after being named best for flavor in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016 and 2017. The Ministry of Commerce will use the latest win to encourage both continued stringent management of Thai rice quality and to promote the product.-VNA
