– The Thai Ministry of Commerce will hold a meeting in Udon Thani province to discuss a project to ensure cassava price in the locality.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanavisit, cassava farmers, entrepreneurs and representatives of governmental agencies will gather at the event.

He will chair the meeting to consult on guidelines of income guarantee for cassava farmers and to listen to opinions from representatives of the parties.

Cassava, along with rice, rubber, palm and corn, are the five agricultural products included in the price guarantee programme outlined by the Thai government to boost farmers’ revenue as part of grassroots economic stimulus.

Udon Thani is one of the seven provinces being home to large plantations, which supply a large amount of cassava and sugarcane to the chemical industry, one of Thailand's 12 prioritised industries.

In its bio-economy plan for the period 2018-2027, the Thai government aims to promote added value for agricultural products such as cassava and sugarcane to increase farmers' income.

Thailand produces about 28-30 million tonnes of fresh cassava root each year, with the participation of over 500,000 households nationwide.

Southeast Asia's second largest economy is also the largest exporter of cassava products in the world, accounting for more than 50 percent of the global market share./.
